How much stuff does a person really need? This is a question Dee Williams has been challenging for years, and after a pivotal trip to Guatemala seven years ago, her conclusion was: not much.

A re-watch of Dee’s TEDx is always good for me.

This is truly playoff hockey when rivals play in one gif.
Carcillo got hit high and the refs missed it. Then he made an amazing play while on the ice and instead they called a hook. He was utterly pissed. He came out of the box, scored and did this. Such an awesome sequence of playoff hockey.

This whole sequence was incredible. You go Carbomb.

Awe I miss our little Carbomb

We think that by protecting ourselves from suffering, we are being kind to ourselves. The truth is we only become more fearful, more hardened and more alienated. We experience ourselves as being separate from the whole. This separateness becomes like a prison for us—a prison that restricts us to our personal hopes and fears, and to caring only for the people nearest to us. Curiously enough, if we primarily try to shield ourselves from discomfort, we suffer. Yet, when we don’t close off, when we let our hearts break, we discover our kinship with all beings.

For adults, it’s harder to change this mentality because materialism can be ingrained over years or even decades. No, you don’t need to sell all your worldly possessions and move to the top of a mountain, but Kasser says one thing that can help is taking yourself out of environments or reevaluating your relationships with people that focus on the materialistic.
